rock a bye baby

When we first found out we were pregnant, Joe and I began scouting Craigslist for a rocking chair.  We have found that keeping up with all the postings (by checking every day) you can find better deals and catch things before they get taken!

We found this little gem in Canyon Lake, about 45 minutes from our house for only $40.  What we loved about it; the wood parts, the shape, and the buttons.

It was a little smaller than we though it would be but it's pretty comfortable which is great because i'm thinking we'll be spending a lot of time rocking a little baby;) It also has a lever that turns off the rocking which is a bonus.

Joe makes the chair seem tiny but I can actually rest my head on the back.

We decided to stain the wooden parts of the rocker before sending it to be reupholstered.  Luckily, Madeleine's crib is a dark brown espresso finish which matches well with the dark stain we already had.  We gave her a good sanding and then applied the stain.  A couple of coats later and it was looking sharp.

We got a great deal on reupholstering thanks to Molly's recommendation!  George, the reupholstering guy, came to pick the chair up and dropped it off when it was finished.  He was able to add larger buttons to the back cushion which allowed us to do different fabrics for each one.  I layed it all out for him on a diagram and labeled each fabric with a number to coordinate with each dot.

The fabric for the buttons came from Hancock Fabrics  and Joanne's and we provided the linen fabric for the main recover as well, only $12 a yard!

Other additions: We had an old ottoman from Target that we asked to be covered to match the chair, we asked for piping around the arms instead of the fancy nail heads, and we asked for more cushion to be added to the seat since it was a little worn in:)

All in all, the chair, ottoman, fabric, and upholstering cost less than $250 and was back in the nursery in a little over one month.  I love George!

And I love this chair...
I can't wait to hold that little baby in my arms rocking her back and forth, back and forth.
